Pioneer has announced its first Blu-ray player for 2011 with the £170 BDP-140.

Pioneer BDP-140

It includes both SACD and 3D Blu-ray playback, as well as an Ethernet port for connection to a home network, and DLNA certification. It’s compatible with the optional Pioneer AS-WL300 wireless LAN converter which allows you to connect it wirelessly to your network.

Playable formats include MKV, DiVX Plus HD, WMV and MP3, as well as a JPEG viewer for photo slideshows and you can control it using the free iControl AV2 app for iOS and Android devices.

Hi-def audio formats like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio can be output as native bitstream or decoded internally and sent as uncompressed multichannel LPCM via HDMI.

When used with a Pioneer SC-LX85 or SC-LX75 AV receiver the BDP-140 can also stream Smoother Link for video, and Sound Retriever Link for audio. These allow the receiver to access information on the original audio or video file format, and optimise playback quality.

An increasingly rare sight these days, the BDP-140 can play SACD (Super Audio CD) discs, outputting the signal via HDMI either as the DSD 1-bit stream, or high-resolution PCM at 88.2kHz/24-bit or 176.4kHz/24-bit.

The BDP-140 goes on sale in the autumn for £170.
