Pioneer AV receivers to get AirPlay

Pioneer has announced that two of its new mid to low-end multichannel receivers will come with Apple AirPlay for network music streaming.

Pioneer VSX-1021

The Pioneer VSX-1021 (£600) and VSX-921 (£450) will be able to connect to your iTunes music library and play it back, controlled from an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

Each of the Pioneer models can be connected to a home network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi using the company’s optional AS-WL300 wireless LAN converter.

As well as AirPlay, the receivers are also compatible with the new Air Jam and iControlAV2 apps.

Air Jam allows the Pioneer devices equipped with the optional AS-BT200 Bluetooth adapter to stream music directly through the receiver. Air Jam can also connect up to four different source components including iPods and mobile phones to the receiver via Bluetooth.

Pioneer’s own iControlAV2 app turns Apple’s iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch into fully equipped remote controls, with access to the receiver’s volume, bass, balance and room settings.

The two pricier models both offer 150 watts across seven channels, HD audio decoding, MCACC automatic room calibration, HD video upscaling to 1080p, internet radio and two playing zones.

The VSX-821 (£350), VSX-521 (£270) and VSX-421 (£230) meanwhile offer 130 watts across five channels, but don’t have Apple AirPlay compatibility, internet radio or compatibility with the new apps.

The new Pioneer AV receivers will all be available in June
