Gefen Premiers Two New KVM Extenders for Creating Absolute Silence in Studios for Hi-End Editing

October 12, 2009 — Press release

Studio professionals have long turned to Gefen for quality KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) extension systems that allow them to place noisy computers in closets away from the editing bay. At AES, Gefen introduces attendees to two new solutions working with the digital resolutions of DVI displays, hi-speed USB 2.0 peripherals and audio peripherals.

DVI-3500HD

This system relies on four strands of LC fiber optic cable to connect a computer to its display, keyboard and mouse located up to 6600 feet (two kilometers) away. The fiber optic cabling links the sender unit at the remote computer to the receiver unit at the studio workstation.

DVI video at 1920 x 1200 resolutions, analog audio, USB 2.0 peripherals and RS-232 control
signals are transmitted instantly from source to display. A unique feature of this KVM extender is the ability to connect a display and USB peripherals at both local (studio) and remote(computer) locations. Users can switch between local and remote modes using a front panel switch on the sender unit. The receiver unit is also equipped with four USB ports, allowing for hard drives, printers and scanners to be connected at the workstation for added convenience.

CAT5-1600HD

This system uses readily available and cost-effective CAT-5 and CAT-6 cabling to extend KVM peripherals up to 250 feet in distance from the computer, far surpassing previous systems using CAT-5 cable. Sender and receiver units are connected by one CAT-6 cable that carries high resolutions video resolutions at 1920 x 1200 in the DVI format, and one CAT-5 cable that carries hi-speed USB 2.0 peripherals. The use of standard CAT-X cables cuts costs while delivering a reliable and stable method of computer extension. Like the DVI-3500HD, the CAT5-1600HD comes equipped with a four-port USB hub on the receiver unit, allowing multiple devices to be powered at the workstation for increased productivity and flexibility.
