Sky boosts HD viewing figures

May 01, 2011 — Article

Sky has announced its customer figures for the last three months, showing an increase in total customers of 51,000, with much of the uptake claimed to be driven by growth for broadband and HD.

Up to 26 per cent of Sky customers now receive Sky broadband, telephone and TV services, which has helped to boost the company’s revenue by 14 per cent year-on-year.

Net additions were down compared to the previous year, but Sky has now boosted the number of people with Sky HD to 3.7 million, 47 per cent more than last year, and the number of people with Sky broadband to 3.2 million.

Viewing figures for Premier League and Champions League football were also up year-on-year and the company claims that the new Sky Atlantic channel has recorded 10 million viewers in its first two months.

The new Sky News for iPad app has also done some promising numbers, with 100,000 downloads recorded in its first week, making it the most downloaded free app on iTunes.

Despite the company reporting a net profit of £174 million for the period, this was still down from £286m in 2010, largely due to last year’s forced sale of a stake in broadcaster ITV.

The profits announcement comes while the proposed takeover of BSkyB by News Corp is still being considered by the regulatory body.
