Swedish hi-fi specialist Primare has announced the BD32, high-end universal player that can handle Blu-ray, SACD and DVD-A discs, as well as to content streamed from a network or stored on external drives.

It’s also 3D-capable, and as well as Blu-Ray, DVD, CD, SACD and DVD-A, it can play back video and picture files from a wired network (Wi-Fi too, using a supplied USB dongle), plus USB or eSATA external devices.

Around the back it has standard phono outputs for both stereo and 7.1-channel speaker systems, as well as balanced XLR stereo outputs, and digital audio out via electrical phono, AES/EBU XLR and Toslink optical connections. It has a pair of 3D-capable 1080p V1.4a HDMI outputs as well as composite and component video, and an RS232. 12V trigger and inferred control connections.
There’s also a LAN port for future software upgrades.

It has customised video circuits and discrete Primare audio stages fed by different dedicated power supplies. Crystal DACs feed separate audio sections optimised for balanced, single-ended and multichannel outputs.

The balanced stage uses Burr-Brown OP-Amps, WIMA and EPCOS polypropylene filter capacitors as well as large MELF resistors. Meanwhile, the single-ended output uses a single MOSFET transistor fed by an active current source rather than passive resistors.

The SACD (DSD) circuit has its own dedicated relay-controlled-filter signal path, and the multichannel audio output stage is driven by a Crystal DSD DAC along with Burr Brown OP-Amps, WIMA and NPO SMD capacitors and large MELF resistors.

Standby power can be set to just 0.5W, giving it green credentials, and the chassis combines heavy-gauge steel and aluminium to act as an all-over heatsink.

The Primare BD32 goes on sale next month in black or titanium finishes for £3,250.
