Onkyo AV receivers (again)

August 24, 2011 — Article

The latest in a very busy year for Onkyo are two new multichannel receivers and a network controller.

Onkyo TX-NR5009

The TX-NR5009 is the company’s new flagship AV receiver and it’s joined by the TX-NR3009 and the PR-SC5509 network AV controller.

All three are THX Ultra 2 and ISF (Image Science Foundation) certified, and fully network enabled.

All include 192kHz/32-bit TI Burr-Brown DACs on all channels, along with a 32-bit DSP chip for audio processing. Video processing is handled by an HQV Vida VHD 1900 processor, and Marveo’s Qdeo technology upscales 1080p video to full 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution.

The TX-NR5009 has 9.2 channels and can be configured to power two other stereo sources around the home. Format-wise it can handle FLAC, WMA Lossless, WAV, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, MP3 and SACD audio.

Sound settings can be optimised using MulltiEQ XT32 room correction and equalisation technology to adjust the sound to suit your room’s unique acoustics. DTS-Neo:X audio processing technology meanwhile allows you to add speakers to a basic 5.1 channel system in three different configurations.

There are eight HDMI inputs, two HDMI outputs, two USB ports and a dedicated port for various Onkyo peripherals. You can also download free Onkyo apps to turn your Android or iPhone/iPod Touch into a full-function remote control.

The 9.2-channel TX-NR3009 includes many of the same features as the flagship model, but uses 24-bit TI Burr-Brown DACs instead of the 32-bit versions. It also uses a different transformer and capacitors as well as doing with gold-plated terminals.

Onkyo PR-SC5509

The Onkyo PR-SC5509 network AV controller is designed to be partnered with a high-end multichannel power amp and includes all the processing and connectivity features of the TX-NR5009, but without the amplification.

All three models will be available in silver and black from September at these prices:

TX-NR5009 £2,700
TX-NR3009 £2,000
PR-SC5509 £2,200
