Samsung Apps hits 5m Smart TV downloads

May 24, 2011 — Article

Samsung Apps has reached 5 million downloads for the company’s Smart TV applications.

The global store, which has been in operation since February 2010, includes both free and paid-for downloads, and unsurprisingly, it’s video apps that have proved most popular.

The top five apps around the world are YouTube, Google Maps, Accuweather, Vimeo and Texas Hold ’Em (which has been cleaning up in France).

So far there are more than 550 apps available, though the number varies depending on the country.

As Samsung’s internet-connected Smart TVs find their way into increasing numbers of homes, the number of downloads is accelerating rapidly, with 2 million apps shifted this January before leaping to the 5 million mark this month.

One of the more recent apps is Explore 3D, which offers access to free 3D video content.

Kevin Kyungshik Lee, Vice President, Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics, said: “These apps are one of the cornerstones of the overall Smart TV experience and they will continue to grow both in number and the diversity of experiences.”
