New Year’s Day is All Vinyl Day on BBC6 Music

BBC Radio 6 Music has announced it will be playing nothing but vinyl on New Year’s Day.

The move is the climax of a month-long celebration of vinyl from the digital-only station that specialises in indie music.

Guest presenters Jarvis Cocker and Guy Garvey will be among the DJs manning the turntables and Don Letts will be bringing in some of his own collection of 7in singles.

Singer-songwriter Richard Hawley will also host a show talking to the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Radiohead about the pros and cons of vinyl, while dance DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall and singer Cerys Matthews will also be spinning some of their favourites.

The BBC mostly phased out vinyl in favour of CDs in the 1990s and stations now generally use digital versions of songs.

Station editor Paul Rodgers said: “In a world dominated by digital music, vinyl is a format still close to the hearts of many music lovers and increased sales demonstrate its enduring appeal.”
