Panasonic has announced two new Blu-ray recorders, both 3D compatible but also featuring twin Freeview HD tuners and Freeview+ HD recording.

Panasonic DMR-BWT800

Both the DMR-BWT700 (£499) and DMR-BWT800 (£799) can record two Freeview HD broadcasts at the same time, or allow you to watch one programme while recording another.

Both can also make recordings to their built-in hard drives (500GB on the BWT800, 320GB on the BWT700) or to dual-layer Blu-ray discs.

When recorded in DR mode on the hard disk, TV programmes can then be converted to HG, HX, HE, HL or HM modes in order to speed up the time taken to archive them on to a BD-RE or BD-R disc.

Each also comes with an SD memory card slot for playback of videos and photos from an HD camcorder or digital camera.

Both devices will also play back 3D Blu-ray discs, as well as convert 2D DVDs or Blu-rays to 3D using their built-in 2D-to-3D conversion and both can be controlled using Panasonic’s iPhone app.

DLNA compatibility means they’re both capable of plug and play home networking and wireless LAN allows easy connection to Panasonic’s Viera Connect web portal, featuring videos on demand from Acetrax and Skype video calling among other goodies.

For its extra £400, the DMR-BWT800 not only has a bigger hard drive, but also comes with two HDMI outputs, ‘digital tube sound’, which simulates the warmth of vacuum tube amplifier sound, and a ‘pure sound mode’ which stops the hard disk’s fan when playing CDs, DVDs or Blu-ray discs.
