Panasonic begins drive for 3D glasses standard

March 31, 2011 — Article

Panasonic has announced the ‘first step’ towards setting a universal standard for active-shutter 3D glasses.

The new M-3DI standard, developed in conjunction with Xpand 3D, is backed by companies including Funai Electric Co, Changhong Electric Co, Hisense Electric Co, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Seiko Epson Corporation, SIM2 and ViewSonic.

Licensing of the new technology will begin next month, with signals initially being sent using infrared technology from the 3D display to the glasses, though radio signals are expected to follow.

A statement from Panasonic said: “M-3DI is a new standard for 3D active-shutter eyewear products that will bring about compatibility among 3D TVs, computers, home projectors and cinema projection. Joining forces with other 3D product manufacturers to standardise active-shutter 3D eyewear will help ensure that consumers have a superlative 3D experience at home and in the cinema. This is a major step towards creating truly universal 3D glasses.”

There is no sign yet from other major 3D manufacturers such as Samsung, LG and Sony as to whether or not they will sign up to the initiative.
