March 11, 2011 — Article

Philips has announced its new TVs for 2011, including its flagship 9000 series and a new Cinema 21:9 Gold TV.

Philips Cinema 21:9

The 50in Cinema 21:9 Gold is intended to fit in just below the existing Platinum 21:9 TV, and uses Philips’ ‘Easy 3D’ passive 3D technology.

It also includes onboard 2D to 3D conversion, full-screen 3D gaming for two players, Philips’ new Smart TV portal via built-in W-Fi, USB recording and Multiview, which allows you to watch two sources at once.

Otherwise, the 21:9 Gold has edge-LED backlighting, a 100Hz, full HD screen, Philips’ own Pixel Precise HD picture, HD Natural Motion and Ambilight Spectra 2 (Ambilight sympathetic lighting on two sides).

Other new TVs come with the 9000, 8000 and 7000 Smart LED TV ranges. The 7000 Series offers passive, ‘easy 3D’, while the 9000 and 8000 come with Philips’ active, 3D Max, solution. The flagship 9000 Series will come in 32, 37, 40, 46 and 52in models.

All the new TVs include active 3D Max technology, Philips’ wireless Smart TV, Perfect Pixel HD processing and Ambilight technology.

The three largest model sizes include Ambilight Spectra XL, while the 32 and 37in sets use Ambilight Spectra 3. All have 400Hz response times except the smallest 32in, which is 200Hz.

The 8000 Series includes the 40PFL8606 and the 46PFL8606, with both offering Ambilight Spectra 2, 3D Max active 3D, 200Hz motion, Smart TV internet capability and LED-backlighting.

The 7000 Series will be available in 32, 37, 42, 47 and 55in sizes, with Ambilight Spectra 2, passive 3D technology, 100Hz motion and Smart TV via Ethernet.

Philips’ Smart TV internet portal is also included in all the new TVs, and consists of four ‘pillars’: SimplyShare, Control, Net TV and Program.

The SimplyShare option allows you to play media from your PC via your home network on your TV. Control is concerned with new iPhone and Android smartphone remote control apps and Net TV is Philips’ internet TV access. Social networking apps Twitter and Facebook are promised, though there’s still no sign of the promised catch-up TV services for the UK yet.

The Program pillar brings you to Philips’ new EPG, which the company claims offers a more intuitive, more enjoyable control system, with the added bonus of USB recording.

The Cinema 21:9 Gold is expected in August, 9000 and 8000 ranges in September and the 7000 in June this year. Prices are still to be confirmed.
