B&W; 800 Series Diamond Speakers (CES 2010)

January 08, 2010 — Article

Bowers & Wilkins has announced a new flagship speaker range at CES: the 800 Series Diamond. Each of the seven models includes the company’s highly regarded (and expensive) diamond tweeter technology.

Top of the range is the 800 Diamond (£18,500), marking the latest incarnation of the monitor speakers used at high-profile audio mastering facilities like Abbey Road and Skywalker Sound.

Improvements include a new dual-magnet drive system which uses neodymium magnets to improve linearity, a unique capacitor design using silver, gold and oil for the crossover as well as oxygen-free copper terminals and links. The top-of-the-range speaker also uses B&W’s trademark Nautilus tube-loading tweeters, Kevlar FST midrange drivers and Matrix enclosures.

The 802 Diamond (£11,500) is a smaller, more ‘home friendly’ version of the 800 using much of the same technology. The 803 Diamond (£7,500) is a still smaller floorstander, using three 18cm bass/mid drivers rather than the 802’s brace of 20cm drivers and the 804 Diamond (£5,750) is the smallest floorstander in the range.

The 805 Diamond (£3,750) is the only standmount option in the range, and B&W claims it’s the most ‘affordable, real world speaker yet’ with Diamond tweeter technology.

A couple of centre speakers complete the line-up in the shape of the HTM2 Diamond (£3,950) and the smaller HTM4 Diamond (£1,950). A few speakers have been removed from the previous 800 Series in this new slimmed down range, including the 801D and any dedicated rear channel speakers. The latter apparently because customers tended to choose 805s over these options.

The Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond will be available from February 2010.
